Sports Law

We know that in this sector, the difference between winning and losing is very small indeed.  To win you need impeccable preparation, determination, effort and a support team of focused, like-minded individuals, to whom success is everything.  In modern sport, the stakes are higher than ever, and all too often the extra-time is played out in the court room.
The sports industry accounts for around 3% of the world’s total economic activity, equating to over $3 trillion per annum.  With this level of economic activity, we feel that clients’ in this sector require specialist legal advice.
Sports law is recognised as a fast moving, multi-faceted and commercially demanding area of law. Covering issues from career ending injuries to complex contractual negotiations, there are many areas where specialist advice is not only a commercial preference, but a commercial requirement.
The diversity of the legal challenges posted by this sector are unparalleled, and in order to maximise opportunities and minimise threats you need a legal team who have recognised expertises across the board.

Our Sports Law Expertise

Leading our team is Hugh Logan. Hugh became involved in Sports Law, mainly due to the fact that he is a Judicial Officer dealing with matters of discipline in rugby football both on and off the field, acting on behalf of the Irish Rugby Football Union, International Rugby Board, European Rugby Cup and Six Nations. As a result of this involvement, he attends annual courses relating to discipline and sports law and this has included representing the Irish Football Association at a 2 day legal conference on legal issues involving soccer held by UEFA.
Outside the context of his legal practice, Hugh has always been involved in the sport of rugby football and is a past President of the Ulster Branch of the IRFU and of Malone RFC. He is also a member of an IFA Licensing Committee that deals with the licensing of soccer clubs to play European football.

Amongst the areas we cover are:
  • Media coverage litigation
  • Litigation and disciplinary issues
  • Personal injuries
  • Advice on starting a sports related business
